Competitions Rules
Eligibility to Enter:
Only fully paid
up members may enter club competitions, which are divided
into novice, intermediate and advanced sections. New
menmbers to the club will normally be considered novice
unless their prvious experience makes it more appropriate
for them to be in a higher category. At the end of the
season, the committee will review the results of the novice
and intermediate category.
A trophy winner may decline promotion but would then, not
be eligible to compete for the same trophy again.
Number of Entries:
For the normal
club competitions, each member may enter up to
three projected images
or prints. For individual projected image and print
battles, five entries are normally required, although this
number may be reduced if the total entry is too large.
Projected Images:
There are two
categories in this classification.
1) Normal 35mm mounted slided 2" x 2". Each slide must be
titles and marked with the authors name and "spotted" in
the bottom left hand corner when held up for normal
viewing. No sticky labels are to be used for the purpose of
titling, naming or spotting. Pens used for marking CDs are
suitable for the purppose of marking slides.
2) Digital competition images
must be sized to 1400px X 1050px for internal club
competitions and 1024px X 768px for external club
competitions. The ONLY file type accepted for projection is
JPEG (.jpg). The picture can be cropped to another size
provided that the overall size of the file is 1400X1050 OR
1024X768. These sizes refer to our clubs projector
requirements.
Entries may be submitted on CD, USB Drive or Email. Each
image should be titled and contain the authors name. IE "My
Picture by The Author.jpg". CD's should be marked with the
author name using a CD marking pen. No sticky labels are to
be used except on the jewel case. If you have been on the
Internet please ensure that your entries have been scanned
with an antivirus or antispyware package.
The number of entries remains as previously stated.
The total number of images presented, on the night, will
remain at three as long as the entered images fit the
subject of the competition.
Naming of Projected
Images:
For Digital projected image
competitions the club uses software to manage the
competition projection and scores. The software (EasyComp
and PhotoCompViewer) automatically reads the title of your
entry and the Author name IF the file is named in the
correct way. You will need to name your entries in the
following format:
"imageTitle by authorName" followed by the three letter
file type extension E.G - Rural View by Joe Bloggs.jpg. The
software will then read the title "Rural View" and allocate
an author name of "Joe Bloggs". This process of naming
files allows us to assemble the competition entries into a
competition directory on our competition computer with
minimal human intervention. We have provided full instructions on how to name and
rename your competition files on the INSTRUCTIONS page
Prints:
Entries for print
competitions must not be larger than 50cm X 40cm (i.e. 20"
x 16") including the mount, but any reasonable combination
of size may be used provided the total area of the print
and mount does not exceed 2000 square cm. There is no
minimum size for prints, although prints smaller than 7"X5"
are unlikely to impress the judges.
Timing of
Entries:
All entries
must
be delivered to the
competitions secretary not later than the club meeting the
week prior to the competition. Late entries will not
normally be accepted. While every care will be taken to
safeguard entries, the club cannot be held responsible for
the loss or damage to prints, projected images or CDs.
Frequency of
entry of Prints / Projected Images:
An individual print or
projected image may be entered in a club competition (open
or set subject) on two occasions only. However,
notwithstanding this rule, any projected image may be
entered once more in an image battle and any print in the
co-lab trophy or George Bushnel shield provided that they
have not been entered in these competitions in previous
years. Images that have been entered into the Co-Lab Trophy
may not be reproduced in the George Bushnel Shield and vice
versa. For the future the two battles, (Co-Lab trophy and
Individual projected image battle), will be portfolio
competitions with five different genre. one image only can
be entered from each of the following selection.
1) Landscape (including seascape, rural and cityscape)
2) Natural history.
3) Portrait (studio or candid).
4) close-up
5) Abstract.
6) Still Life.
7) Documentary.
8) Pictorial.
9) Sport.
10) movement.
11) Buildings but not close-up.
The same categories, but with different images, may be used
in both competitions. An image that has been entered once
as a projected image or slide, in any competition, may be
reproduced once more as a print in another competition.
Similarly any print entered once in any competition may be
subsequently be reproduced once more as a projected image
in another competition. This will adhere to the rule that
no projected image or print may be shown more than twice in
open or set subject competitions.
George Bushell
Shield:
For clarification purposes it should be understood that
this competition was originally for black ad white OR
chromagenic film only. The scope of this competition has
now been widened to allow the production of a black and
white print from any source. The image may not be tined and
if printed digitally it must be devoid of all colours.
Printing can be conventional, commercial or digital.
Non-compliance
with the rules:
Entries that do not comply with the above rules will be
rejected, however the competition secretary will normally
contact the author to inform him that his entry is not
acceptable and give him the opportunity to resubmit his
entry.
Judging
Entries:
The decisions of the competition judges are final.
Annual
Awards:
Trophies are awarded for the best overall performance in
prints and projected images at each level (Novice,
Intermediate and Advanced) and there are various other
trophies for particular competitions. All members are urged
to enter competitions regularly and to the fullest extent
possible and are encouraged to submit new or recent
material rather than old work, however there is no time
limit to the age from which work may be selected. It is up
to the author to ensure that his entries come within the
club rules when selecting material which is dated.
